How do i improve the connection on my 2 way radio antenna?

I drive a cab, and have an external antenna. The brand is antennex, not sure on the model number but have noticed a decrease in reliability…

        Can I get a shorter antenna for the 2 way radio on my taxi car?

        I need to store my new taxi in the garage, and the antenna barely clears the electric garage door with my older Crown Vic taxi. I’m considering changing to a Ford Escape for my new taxi, but the auto roof is a foot higher, and I’m afraid the 2 way radio antenna mounted on the Escape roof will not clear. It’s about 1.5 feet tall.
        Is it possible to use a shorter antenna ? Jeeze, it seems like just a simple stiff wire. Can I just clip 6 or 8 inches off?
        I know someone out there knows about this stuff. I’m hoping to hear from you.

            Text/sms 2 way radio?

            I’ve been looking around but I can only find 1 product. It seems a little big. I just thought it would be nice on a cruise ship to text using 2 way radios instead of cell phones which costs a lot of money. Using a walkie talkie (2 way radio) to talk can be loud and annoying sometimes when you just want to tell someone to meet up somewhere. I found some china seller website that has it, but it seems like that is aimed more at business to buy so they can sell to consumers.
